I'm angry...and here's why April 29, 2010 |
Hi, Bob Jakobsen here from the Recovery Network. I going to talk today about something that is effecting me personally and maybe it’s effecting you too. Depression. I have done some research on depression and that’s what this article is about, along with my own life experiences. Little did I know that one of the main causes of depression…is ANGER. And I’m angry about a lot of things. I’m angry about the economy, I’m angry about my financial situation, I’m angry about losing my home, I’m angry about having a car repossessed. Yes, I’m angry about a lot of things and those things may be causing depression. Here are some facts: Depression is the number one mental health problem in America. Drug and alcohol treatment centers claim that they see more cases of depression than all other emotional problems combined. Depression can strike any age group, but it is most common in people in their forties and fifties. Depression occurs TWO times more often in women than in men and is THREE times more prevalent in higher socioeconomic classes than in lower classes. Most tend to think of depression as a long-term, deep sadness. But the reality is that depression has much more to do with ANGER than with sadness. People also tend to think of depression as something that takes place in the mind and the emotions. And while that’s true, depression also has a powerful and destructive effect on the body. Anxiety Anxiety and depression often occur together. The depressed person often develops signs of anxious, irritable behavior. He or she may seem tense, nervous, and agitated. Whereas many depressed people sit and stare at the walls for long periods of time, the person with combined depression and anxiety may have trouble sitting still. We all experience some degree of depression from time to time. What I have found out is...this emotional suffering is not only treatable, but preventable.
